Sherwin Williams Duration Paint – The BEST Exterior Paint
July 18th, 2009 categories: Buyer Resource, Seller Resource
Last month, I attempted to tackle the subject of what are the best paint colors to choose when painting a home. Hopefully we did a decent job, as we often get questions, and thank you’s for writing that article.

Now that we have the subject of paint color covered (no pun intended)…what brand of paint do we use? Should we go with Consumer Reports top choice? Should we go with the top of the line paint at Lowe’s or The Home Depot? I suppose all of those would be fine choices, however I think there is one FINEST choice…Sherwin Williams Duration.
When choosing a paint, why not go to the place where professional painters shop? I suppose it is the same as suggesting a fine butcher when purchasing the finest cuts of meat, when one can easily just go to the local Safeway.
I hope that analogy is clear. If not, we tend to think those that specialize in an industry tend to know the details of that industry better.
I have used Duration myself, and think that this is the ultimate paint money can buy. I did not paint my home myself, I hired a trusted professional, but I am super pleased with the results. I will discuss the benefits and drawbacks below.
Benefits Of Sherwin Williams Duration
- Lifetime Guarantee (for as long as you own your home)
- One Coat Coverage. This is no joke…this stuff dries to 7 mils thick…most other paints dry between 2 and 3 mils thick.
- Self Priming
- No Peeling, No Blistering – Virtually no maintenance of the painted surface is needed.
- Multiple Finishes Available – Flat, Satin and Gloss
- Applications – Can be sprayed, rolled or brushed.
Drawbacks Of Sherwin Williams Duration
- Cost – Duration can cost as much as $45.99 per gallon at last check. I suggest trying to negotiate a contractor/professional rate when purchasing 5 gallons or more.
- Ease Of Use – Duration is a much thicker paint, and is not designed to be thinned. About halfway through the job, it is suggested you change brushes and rollers to avoid clumping.
Sherwin Williams Duration is available in exterior and interior formulations. There is a higher cost for this product relative to many others, however the benefits of the single coat, self priming nature, thickness and surface hardness make us believe that this is a superior product that will save you time in the short run and time and money in the long run.
Let us know if you try it, and if so, how you like it.
